Excessive Drug Consumption is Dangerous to the Bones.

Continuous usage of some drugs may result in losing bone (osseous) tissue. This happens due to low level of calcium in the body. Calcium is very important for normal bone formation and their strength. If you are taking some sort of the drug for a period that exceeds 6 months, consult your doctor and tell him about possible side effect that weakens your bones.

The list of the drugs that proved to be dangerous to the bones:

  • Glucocorticoids. Medications from this group lower the level of calcium in blood because they decrease the ability of digestive system to absorb calcium from food.
  • Thyroid gland hormone. It causes a rapid destruction of bone tissue when taken in big doses.
  • Drugs that take away spasms, such as: Phenobarbital and Fenitonin. If these drugs are taken during a long period of time, they may cause osteoporosis as they block a positive effect of vitamin D that stimulates calcium absorption.
  • Antiacids containing aluminium. Aluminium changes calcium in organism and weakens bone tissue. So make sure to take special calcium restoring drugs while using antacids.
  • Cholesteromin. This drug is used to decrease the level of cholesterol in the body but it blocks the action of vitamin D.

In order to prevent osteoporosis and keep your bones strong, I recommend you to take calcium restoring drugs together with medications from the list. Or, as an option, you may take these drugs avoiding your digestive system. Medications in a form of aerosol and injections are quite safe for your bones.
